Matthew and Julian´s first day of school was on Monday and Matthew is officially in FIRST GRADE. Incredible to believe. The list of school materials was a mile long. Including 17 different notebooks. I mean, WOW! $60 later I walked out of there and still hadn´t bought the backpacks and lunchboxes. So fun getting their backpacks all set up and putting both kids names on EVERY. SINGLE. THING. Including repellent, sunblock, toothpaste, toothbrush, glue, erasers, etc.
They have to be at school by 7am now, which it used to be 8am in preschool and kindergarten. It´s still 8am for Julian but he goes at 7am because Matthew does. There are other little ones there that early too so he´s not alone and has a great time playing. So this means getting up no later than 6am and even when everyone is cooperative, it´s HARD to get out of there by 6:50am. Luckily the first day everyone was cooperative and did as I said but we still managed to walk in to Matthew´s classroom at 7:05am. Of course it was chaotic being the first day of school with lots of parents and kids everywhere and they were trying to get enough desks in the room for everyone to sit down. I don´t understand how, but they never seem to really know how many kids are going to show up. They have to be enrolled and paid for so I don´t get how they don´t know, but they don´t. When we first walked in, it was almost full and Matthew just walked in like a pro, leaving his backpack by the other ones and walking around to find a place to sit. He didn´t really know the teacher, but knew most of the students even thought there were still about 8 new students. Being shy like he is, I was shocked at how he walked in and walked through everyone to the other side of the room by himself like such a big boy! Normally he would have stood by my side at the entrance waiting for the teacher to motion him to come in and show him where to sit but this time he just went on in. I´m so proud of how he´s grown up and so independent. It´s amazing.
After I left him sitting there at his desk I went to take Julian to his classroom. It´s the same room and teachers as last year and a couple of new students. One of the new students is named Matthew and I found that out before it started so I told Julian that he was going to have a little Matthew in his class and that was one of the first things he said when waking up in the morning was that he was going to meet the little Matthew. There aren´t many Matthews in Costa Rica so it´s a pretty big deal! Julian was also excited to be starting again and had been asking when school was going to start again since early January. He walked in like a pro too, not a tear in his eye, just a bit serious. I gave him a kiss and was on my way. It´s always good not to hang around too long because it gives him a chance to think a little too much about what is going on.
When I picked them up, they both had very good days and Matthew said first grade was going to be easy because everything the teacher asked them to do, he did it very well. Back to school was a complete success and I´m glad to be back in the normal everyday routine. I´m in my store from 9am till 3pm every day until I have to go pick them up. I´m so happy to have a job that I can work at only when they are in school and when they´re out, I´m with them! The BEST of both worlds really.
