Matthew had his first full week back at school this week and I thought it went really well. I thought he would be knocked out tired by dinner time but he wasn't as exhausted as I thought. I was glad about that because when he's so tired, he can be really difficult and if it happens right around dinner time, he won't want to eat or take a bath or anything. This year he's in school until 3pm every day. They have different activities every day after lunch. Monday he has swim lessons, Tuesday-writing skills, Wednesday-gymnastics, Thursday-math skills and Friday-arts and crafts. I thought Mondays and Wednesday were going to really wear him out because not only is his afternoon activity and "active" one, after that, he has Taekwondo. To make matters worse, on Wednesday he has PE which is once a week but that's on the same day as Taekwondo as well but it didn't seem to affect him too much.
We got his Taekwondo uniform and here are some new pics.

TaeKwondo
Great TaeKwondo class for Matthew today! He did everything he was told and did it well. If you don't know, this is a very strict sport and here it is considered a "discipline sport" which I'm pretty sure most martial arts are considered around the world.
Also, Julian slept REALLY well though the night last night. Just one wake up around 11pm to nurse, then a little later, a five minute cry and after that, slept till 5:30am. For those that don't know, sleeping till only 5:30am is a great welcome if they'll just sleep through the night! Happy, happy!
Matthew is in the red shirt. His uniform is on its way from San Jose with a friend!

What to do?
Both kids are asleep by 8pm tonight and I don't know what to do with this free time! Julian is always asleep by 8pm, sometimes ten til and Matthew is usually asleep by 8:30-8:45pm and tonight they werre both passed out by 8pm.....I know it's only 30-45 mins early but that's A LOT on mommy time and I'm stumped about what to do with it, hahahaha. That's why I decided to go for post number 2 tonight and try and remember what I've been wanting to write about.
Some new developments with Julian today are 1) he can climb up on the sofa and goes directly to a standing position to flick on and off the light 2) he can climb onto the coffee table and pretty much goes to a standing position in the case of today when he wanted to see the computer on the breakfast bar (which we never use as a breakfast bar) and 3) he can climb onto a dining room chair and make it to a crawling position on the dining room table (that's as far as he got when I caught him). There are other accomplishments here and there but really, this climbing thing is the one that I'm most worried about. How am I ever going to even leave him in the living room on his own just for a quick moment to go to the bathroom or get something from the kitchen? Oh yeah, don't get me started on the kitchen....he's into the trashcan, the oven (literally tried to crawl in there), the recycle, the fridge (which I think I posted a picture of on the blog from earlier today), etc. He can officially open up the fridge and loves to start moving stuff from the door to the inside and vice versa. He can do that all day! It's really cute but he's got a phlegmy cough that I really would like to get rid of so I don't feel like hanging out in the refrigerator with nothing but a onsie on is a good idea. When Matthew went through this stage, we had a gate put on the kitchen entrance (baby gates are really hard to find and really expensive if you do in Costa Rica) and that gate is back in full usage. I just keep it closed most of the time and step over back and forth every time I go to the kitchen. A pain in the neck but it's less of a pain than pulling Julian out of the trash, oven or fridge every few minutes.
Matthew's new developments are that tomorrow he's going to start his first ever extracurricular activity (like a real one, not some afterschool program). He's starting taking Tae Kwondo! I'm so excited about this for many reasons. First, it teaches great discipline which over the last month or so, I've really noticed how he's matured and can be reasoned with and seems so well behaved when we go places. So, the discipline is not the only reason but also the physical activity which I know he loves and he has so much energy. Then, I found out that one of his best buddies from preschool is going to be in the class too so he's REALLY going to be into it (I hope that lasts). Since he loves Spiderman so much these days, I told him that he was going to learn some new moves that Spiderman could use and then we went to YouTube to see some other kids doing Tae Kwondo so he would get an idea of what it is. I sure hope it works out. We are looking into getting him started on a musical instrument too, but we have to see. I would LOVE to hear him playing a string instrument or piano or something. This year at preschool, it's the year before Kindergarten and they have afterschool options of planned activities that include swimming, theater, painting, arts and crafts, among others. I hope he gets into doing all these great things so he can learn a little about many areas and develop his likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses.
He starts school next week on Thursday, February 14th. It sure is going to be boring around here without him. It sounds like I'm being funny, but I'm serious. He and Julian entertain each other so well and play off of each other. One without the other just isn't the same. I can't imagine life with just one of them. But three might be just a bit much. In case anyone is wondering, we decided to stop at two even though there was serious thought of a third. If my husband had a regular Monday though Friday job and was home in the evenings and weekends, things might be different but often I refer to myself as a well taken care of single mom. Luckily I'm not the needy type but for three children, we'd have to have a more hands on, around the house father.

Popcorn in the Tree?
The other day I noticed a pigeon had made a nest in our tangerine tree and I went to tell our housekeeper. We've watched others make their nest, lay eggs, hatch them and fly away in the past, so I wanted to point it out. Matthew was nearby on the trampoline so apparently he was listening as I'm seeing that he always is these days. In Spanish, the word for pigeon or dove (yes, the same word....weird) is "paloma" or if you're talking about a small one "palomita". They also call popcorn in Costa Rica "palomitas" since they do really kinda look like little doves, don't they? So, my housekeeper and I are talking in Spanish over and over about this palomita in the tree and Matthew says "I wanna see!" And he jumps down off the trampoline and runs over. He's looking and looking and says he doesn't see it. I keep saying "right there Matthew, right there. Don't you see it???" As I'm pointing and pointing. Then he turns to me and says in English, "I don't see any popcorn in the tree."
